Experiencing occasional anxiety is a normal part of everyday life because anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress. It’s a feeling of fear or apprehension about what’s to come. For example, it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious about going to a job interview or taking a test. While ordinary anxiety is unpleasant as you often feel fearful and nervous, it is a feeling that comes and goes but doesn’t interfere with your everyday life.

But if your feelings of anxiety are extreme and are interfering with your life, you may have an anxiety disorder. In the case of an anxiety disorder, the feeling of fear may be with you all the time and it’s intense and often debilitating. People with anxiety disorders frequently have intense, excessive and persistent worries and fears about everyday situations that may appear illogical to other people.

This type of anxiety may cause you to stop doing things you enjoy, such as socialising. You may also avoid places or situations to prevent having to experience these unpleasant feelings. If left untreated, the anxiety will only get worse. These feelings of anxiety and panic interfere with daily activities, are difficult to control, are out of proportion to the actual danger and can last a long time.

Anxiety disorders are the most common form of emotional disorder and can affect anyone. Examples include generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), specific phobias and separation anxiety disorder.
