Low self-esteem is typically characterised by a lack of confidence and feeling badly about yourself. People with low self-esteem often feel unlovable, awkward, or incompetent. They tend to be hypersensitive, fragile people who can easily be wounded by others.

People with low self-esteem are also hypervigilant and very alert to signs of rejection and inadequacy. Often, they will see rejection and disapproval even when there isn’t any. Plus, they worry that they will make a mistake, use poor judgement, and make a fool of themselves.

A person with low self-esteem is very critical of themselves and having a negative perception of yourself can have serious consequences. For example, if you believe that other people don’t like you, you’re more likely to avoid interactions with others and be quicker to react defensively, cynically, or even lash out. Furthermore, when you view yourself negatively, it becomes more and more difficult to believe that others could possibly see you in a positive light. In short, you constantly feel downright unhappy.

Because of our low self-esteem we have a critical inner voice (or internal observer) that negatively judges our thoughts and actions. This nasty inner critic continually bombards you with a barrage of negative thoughts about yourself and decimates your self-esteem on a regular basis with thoughts like:

“You’re stupid.”

“You’re fat.”

“Nobody likes you.”

“You’re worthless.”
